4 Key Decisions: Record label

We decided on an indie record label, a branch of a bigger label, which we chose to be Sony Music Entertainment.

As our artist is an indie band, it wouldn't make sense for them to sign to a main major record label, especially as we are planning for them to be a new band. Conventionally they would sign to a smaller subsidiary label, and likely one that is more genre-specific, a decision shown in the notes we made in our production meeting below:

This decision was based on researching similar artists, such as Walk the Moon, Everything Everything and Bleachers, who are all signed to RCA Records, a subsidiary company of Sony Music Entertainment.

RCA Records is based in New York, and when coming up with our own label, a difference is we have decided to base ours in London, giving British indie artists a platform for success - they can be signed close to home, to a label attached to a major company, Sony Music Entertainment.

Hypothetically, if our label existed, we would sign artists such as:
(Bleachers, Everything Everything, Foxes, Kodaline, Mø, Tom Odell, Neon Jungle)
These are all indie artists of some description. Even though some of these artists (Bleachers, Kodaline and Mø) are based in other countries, as a London-based label we would sign mainly British artists.

We decided to call our label Husky Records, because we thought it is a memorable and quirky name well suited to an indie label (and not too different from some real life indie labels such as Domino Records). "Husky" can also have a double meaning - the breed of dog, which provides an opportunity for a recognisable logo, and also the style of voice, so the name of the record has a subtle link to music.
